According to research by the US-based Blacksmith Institute foundation, Russia tops the list of the world's dirtiest cities: 8 out of 35 filthiest cities are in Russia.

The main criterion of urban environmental contamination is the hazard of toxic substances and heavy metals emitted by manufacturing plants through atmospheric emissions.

Litter is another cause of urban pollution. Every year, Russia produces about 27 million tons of solid waste most of which is not processed. Great quantities of consumer waste ends up in unregulated dumps that keep growing in number. Toxic substances flow into lakes and rivers, and then poisoned water can penetrate the water supply network. As to street litter, according to Forbes, the Russian capital ranks 14th among the world's filthiest cities.

Each citizen of this nation, if they care about their own health and that of their family, and help and solve this problem by simply remembering that litter must not be dropped where it doesn't belong.
